The Benefits of Organic Coconut Oil For Your Dog

Coconut oil has been used by humans for many years because of the amazing benefits it provides. It makes sense why pet owners across the world choose to give their dogs coconut oil. At The Pet Gourmet, we offer only the best for your dog, our Organic Coconut Oil comes in a solid form and can be given many different ways.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Your Dog

Treating and Healing Dog's Wound with Coconut Oil

Always consult your vet before trying something new on your dog. Our dogs sometimes find themselves in situations that don’t end up in their favor. If you find a cut on your pup, grab the coconut oil! Warm the oil up in your hands and apply to the wound. Your dog may love the taste and want to lick it right off. It’s safe for your dog to ingest but removing the oil before the skin can absorb it won’t provide the full benefits. If they are interested in eating it, we suggest wrapping it with muscle wrap.

Coconut oil contains high amounts of lauric acid. This means coconut oil is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. This is what makes coconut oil such a good wound treatment. Not only will it speed up the healing and clean the wound, but it will also prevent infections from happening. This oil can be applied to bites, scrapes, hot spots, and more.

Coconut Oil to Relieve Itching and Dry Skin for Dogs

Does your dog always seem to be itching and scratching? Is his/her coat just not looking its best? Many dogs struggle with dry skin which then leads to an unhealthy coat. Coconut oil is your one-stop-shop for dry, flaky skin. This problem can be fixed internally or externally, both ways work the same. Try heating up some coconut oil and adding it on top of your dog's food. Or you can apply the coconut oil directly onto your dog's skin and coat and let it sit for a few minutes. Coconut oil works to deeply moisturize the skin and provide a good base for a healthy coat.

If your dog is experiencing a dry or cracked nose or paws you will love our new Nose & Paw Balm which is made with the same coconut oil along with other soothing ingredients. It can also be used on hot spots and bites.

Incorporating Coconut Oil into Your Dog's Diet

Add Coconut Oil to Dog Treats

Treats are an excellent way to make sure your dog is getting all the benefits of coconut oil. Try adding our coconut oil into our at-home baking mix. This allows you to make a flavorful treat that your dog will love, while also becoming a healthier and happier pup!

How to Add Coconut Oil to Your Dog's Food

If you would like to add coconut directly to your dog's food bowl, you can feed 1 teaspoon daily food for every 10 lbs of weight. Gradually add it to your dog's diet and consult with your vet before you begin. Overfeeding coconut oil can lead to greasy stool or diarrhea so starting small and adding it gradually is important.

Plus, both of our Dehydrated Base Mixes contain a healthy amount of coconut flakes! Find our base mixes here.
