Tips to keep your Dog Safe in the summer heat

🌞 Summer Heat Safety Tips for Dogs: Keep Your Pup Cool & Happy!

Summer is all about sunny adventures, long walks, and backyard BBQs—but when the temps rise, it’s important to make sure your furry friend stays safe and comfortable. Dogs can overheat quickly, and they rely on us to help them beat the heat. Here are our top tips for keeping your pup cool, healthy, and wagging all summer long!

đŸ•¶ïž 1. Avoid Midday Heat

The hottest part of the day—usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.—can be dangerous for dogs, especially brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers). Plan walks early in the morning or later in the evening when the pavement is cooler and the sun isn’t so intense.

Pro tip: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws!

💧 2. Keep Them Hydrated

Dogs can’t sweat like we do—they cool off by panting and through their paw pads. Always have fresh, cool water available whether you're at home, on a walk, or at the lake. A collapsible travel bowl or insulated water bottle made for dogs is a great investment for outings!

đŸŸ 3. Provide Shade & Cooling Options

Whether you’re at a park, on the patio, or in the backyard, make sure your dog has a shady spot to relax. Pop-up tents, umbrellas, or even a tree can help. You can also set up:

  • A kiddie pool for splashing

  • A cooling mat or damp towel to lie on

  • Frozen treats or dog-safe popsicles (we carry some great options in-store!)

🚗 4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car

This one can’t be stressed enough. Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can reach dangerous temperatures in minutes. Running into the store "for just a second" can be fatal. When in doubt, leave your pup at home with the A/C on.

🍖 Watch for Signs of Overheating

 Bonus Tip: Choose Summer-Safe Treats
Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion in dogs. If you notice any of the following, cool your dog down immediately and contact your vet:
  • Excessive panting or drooling

  • Bright red gums or tongue

  • Lethargy or confusion

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Collapse or loss of coordination

🍖 Bonus Tip: Choose Summer-Safe Treats

Some treats spoil fast in heat or upset sensitive stomachs. Our Beef Liver Strips are a single-ingredient, high-protein option that travels well and won’t melt in your bag. Great for hikes, lakeside snacks, or a backyard BBQ.
